Dallas County Jail
The Dallas County Jail is located in Selma, Alabama, and is operated by the Dallas County Sheriff's Department. This facility holds inmates who have been arrested by local county or municipal law enforcement, and is the primary detention facility for all law enforcement agencies in Dallas County.
The Dallas County Jail houses:
- Inmates who have been charged and are awaiting trial
- Those who have been arrested on warrants
- Those who have been sentenced to the county jail for a misdemeanor crime
- Those who've been placed on hold by Alabama Probation and Parole
- Inmates sentenced by municipal courts in the county
- People who have been placed in the jail "on hold" by other agencies, and
- Inmates who are waiting to be transferred to their assigned Alabama Department of Corrections facility.
The Dallas County Sheriff's Department works closely with local citizens - along with local, state and federal agencies - to make the community a safe place to live, work, and enjoy life.
The department is led by Sheriff Michael L. Granthum, and it employs 27 sworn deputies who patrol nearly 980 square miles of territory. The department maintains 18 marked cars and their central dispatch office handles communications for both the county and the city of Selma, 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
The Dallas County Sheriff's Department maintains the County Jail with a staff of 28 people. The jail houses, on average, 180 inmates.
The Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center
The Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center was established in 2008 and concentrates on the needs of at-risk youth.
This facility provides supervision and guidance with the assistance of parents and the community. It is a long term detention center which receives both males and females between the ages of 13-18 years of age from the Juvenile Courts of Dallas and other counties.
The goals of the Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center are to develop positive behavior through structured counseling and education in self-control, character education, life skills, anger management, conflict resolution, academics, and physical education.

You can't call an inmate who is housed at the Dallas County Jail, but they do have access to phones, and are allowed to make outgoing calls.
How to Send Money
During the booking process at Dallas County Jail, a commissary account is set up for each inmate. If the inmate has money in their possession during the booking process, the money will be taken and placed into their inmate commissary account.
