Elmore County Jail

The Elmore Jail is located in Wetumpka, Alabama, and is operated by the Elmore County Sheriff's Department. This facility holds inmates who have been arrested by local county or municipal law enforcement, and is the primary detention facility for all law enforcement agencies in Elmore County.

Inmates are incarcerated for crimes ranging from a violation to misdemeanors to felonies. The Elmore Jail houses:

  • Inmates who have been charged and are awaiting trial
  • Those who have been arrested on warrants
  • Those who have been sentenced to the county jail for one year or less for a misdemeanor crime
  • Those who've been placed on hold by Alabama Probation and Parole
  • Inmates sentenced by municipal courts in the county
  • People who have been placed in the jail "on hold" by other agencies, and
  • Inmates who are waiting to be transferred to their assigned Alabama Department of Corrections facility.
  • Federal inmates under contract with the United States Marshal's Office

Elmore County Sheriff's Office has been providing law enforcement services to the citizens of Elmore County since 1867. They serve a county that covers 625 square miles and a population of approximately 85,000.

Visiting Hours and Rules

The Elmore Jail allows visits with inmates over a video visitation machine. Inmates are allowed one visit per weekend, on site at the jail, at no charge to the friends and family. These visits must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance.

The Elmore Jail also offers friends and family the option of visiting using their cell phone or computer by setting up an account with Securus Technologies. All incoming and outgoing mail is processed through the United States Postal Service. The Elmore County Jail currently accepts post cards only. If a letter is mailed to the jail that letter will be returned to the sender. 

Inmates may receive two soft back books a month, but the books must come directly from a publisher company ie: books-a-million, Amazon, etc.

How to Call an Inmate

You can't call an inmate who is housed at the Elmore Jail, but they do have access to phones, and are allowed to make outgoing calls. Friends and family may call 1-800-844-6591 to set up an account so the inmate can contact them without the call being a collect call.

How to Send Money

During the booking process at Elmore Jail, a commissary account is set up for each inmate. If the inmate has money in their possession during the booking process, the money will be taken and placed into their inmate commissary account.

The Elmore County Jail currently contracts with Stacy Williams Company to provide commissary items. Friends and family can visit the Sheriff's Office lobby or go to www.jailfunds.com to add money to an inmate's account. 

If you choose to visit the Sheriff's Office lobby, there is a kiosk located in the East corner that will accept cash or credit/debit cards. Inmates have a $75.00 spending limit per week. They have the option to order snacks, drinks, personal hygiene items, stationary items, and some clothing.

Programs For Inmates

Elmore County Jail inmates are allowed visitation, telephone, commissary, mail, and exercise privileges. Based upon their behavior, one or more privileges may be taken away without friends and family being notified.

Work Release

In order for inmates at Elmore Jail to obtain work release status, the following requirements must be met:

  • The inmate must be employed, and have their employer fill out an application with Mrs. Moncrief at the Elmore County Jail.
  • The employer must bring the inmate's paycheck to Mrs. Moncrief so the money can be put on their books.
  • All applications are reviewed by the Sheriff for his approval/disapproval.
