- Inmates who have been charged and are awaiting trial
- Those who have been arrested on warrants
- Those who have been sentenced to the county jail for one year or less for a misdemeanor crime
- Those who've been placed on hold by Alabama Probation and Parole

The primary duty of the Escambia County Jail is to serve the community by providing a safe, secure facility where people are treated with dignity and respect and held accountable for their actions.
Pre-trial confinement at the Escambia County Jail is not for punishment purposes. It is merely to assure that the arrestee appears in court at their scheduled time.
However, sentenced inmates are in the Escambia County Jail as punishment for their offenses. The deputies and civilian staff are responsible for making productive use of the inmates' time while not inflicting further punishment upon them.
