Lowndes County Jail
The Lowndes County Jail -- also known as the John Hulett Detention Facility -- is located in Hayneville, Alabama, and is operated by the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department.
This facility holds adult male and female inmates who have been arrested by local county or municipal law enforcement, and is the primary detention center for all law enforcement agencies in Lowndes County.
Inmates are incarcerated for crimes ranging from a violation to misdemeanors to felonies. The Lowndes County Jail houses:
- Persons who have been charged with a crime and are awaiting trial
- Those who have been arrested on warrants
- Those who have been sentenced to the county jail for one year or less for a misdemeanor crime
- Those who've been placed on hold by Alabama Probation and Parole
- Inmates sentenced by municipal courts in the county
- People who have been placed in the jail "on hold" by other agencies, and
- Inmates who are waiting to be transferred to their assigned Alabama Department of Corrections facility
Bonding someone out of the Lowndes County Jail
Please call the jail to find out which bond options are available for your inmate. The bond amounts and types are based on the crime your inmate is being charged with. ALL bonds -- cash, property, and bail bondsman -- require a $35.00 bond-filing fee in the form of a money order.
- Cash Bond
Pay the total amount of the bond at the clerk’s office, inside the courthouse and then bring a copy of the receipt to the jail.
- Property Bond
Obtain a property assessment printout from the Revenue Commissioners office, inside the courthouse. Bring the property assessment printout to the jail for review. Property must be valued at the total amount of the bond or greater than the total amount of the bond.
Everyone listed on the property assessment must be present to sign the bond. If necessary, more than one property assessment can be used to make a bond and the property values will be added together.

Visiting Hours and Rules
The Lowndes County Jail has visiting hours every Thursday and Sunday, but reserves the right to cancel visitation at any time.
Visitation hours are as follows:
9:30 am-11:00 am Inmates whose last names begin with A-M.
1:00 pm- 3:00pm Inmates whose last names begin with N-Z.
3:00 pm- 3:30 pm All female inmates.
Each inmate is allowed a total of one hour of visitation (three 20-minute visits) per visiting day.
Visiting Rules
All visitors must be on the inmate's visiting list. No child under the age of 18 is allowed inside the facility during inmate visitation hours. Children can not be left outside of the facility or in a vehicle without adult supervision.
All visitors are required to present a current state ID or driver’s license, with a photograph, at time of visit.
All visitors are checked for outstanding warrants or restraining orders. Visitors must not have been incarcerated in the Lowndes County Jail within the last six months.
All personal items -- purses, bags, cell phones recording devices, writing instruments, weapons or any device which can be construed as a weapon -- must be left secured in your vehicle. You may be charged if found in possession with any of the devices listed, inside the facility.
No food or drinks allowed in the visitation room.
No packages, mail, money orders, notes, or photographs will be accepted for an inmate before, during, or after visitation.
Dress code
- No revealing, and/or see-thru clothing, no sleeveless or low-cut shirts are allowed during visitation time.
- Dresses, skirts, or shorts must not be higher than one inch above the knee.
- No spandex (shirts/pants), tight fitting clothing, or fish net shirts are to be worn during visitation.
- No hats or clothing which displays obscene/ offensive language or gestures is allowed.
All visitors to the facility should use the front parking area and enter the facility through the front lobby.

Incoming and outgoing inmate mail is subject to inspection for the presence of contraband. Inmates may receive only metered, unstamped, plain white postcards no larger than 4" x 6" as mail. Writing must be in pencil or blue or black ink.
Inmates may receive books, magazines, or periodicals directly from the publisher or online distributor, like Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Hard bound books are not accepted.
