Gila County Jail

The Gila County Jail has two locations. One is Globe, Arizona, the other is in Payson, Arizona.

Arizona, and is operated by the Gila County Sheriff's Office. This facility houses adult male and female inmates who have been arrested by local county or city law enforcement and is the primary detention center for all law enforcement agencies in Gila County. 

Although a portion of Northern Gila County is Navajo Nation, Gila County has jurisdiction for all the non-native American population living on the Navajo Nation. 

Inmates are incarcerated at the Gila County Jail for crimes ranging from violations to misdemeanors to felonies. The Gila County Jail also houses those who have been charged with a crime and are awaiting trial.

The facility houses state inmates awaiting transfer to the Arizona Department of Corrections. The jail also contracts with other county and tribal jurisdictions to house their inmates on an as needed basis.

Visiting Hours and Rules

Inmates are eligible for visitation after their initial appearance before a Judge or Magistrate, unless he/she is being released from custody.

Visiting hours at the Globe Jail Facility are Tuesday - Sunday between 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 - 8:00 p.m. Visitation is limited to two hours per inmate per week. All active visits will be terminated at 2:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Inmate Visitation at the Payson Jail Facility is on Wednesday and Thursday from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday between 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. The length of visits at this location are limited to 15 minutes.

Visitation Requirements

  • All visitors must have a valid government picture identification with date of birth.
  • No one under the age of 18 may visit an inmate unless accompanied by an adult.
  • Any person who has been in the custody of the Gila County Jail within the past six months will not be granted visitation.
  • Picture taking during visitation is strictly prohibited.

All visitors arriving for inmate visitation must be properly dressed. If you wear any clothing or accessories that are deemed inappropriate, you will not be allowed to visit. The following dress code is strictly enforced:

  • All clothing must be clean and worn in the proper manner. Proper undergarments must be worn.
  • Sheer, see-through and open-netted clothing is prohibited.
  • Tank (muscle), tube, halter, strapless or spaghetti strap dresses and tops are prohibited.
  • Tops that display bare midriff, mesh clothing, bodysuits and swimsuits are prohibited.
  • Clothing with inappropriate language (profanity), pictures, symbols/designs is prohibited.

All Inmates are allowed to send and receive legal mail, general correspondence, and publications.  All publications must be approved by Jail Supervision. Contraband, and material which constitutes a threat to the safety, security, or order of the Gila County Jail is prohibited. All incoming correspondence -- with the exception of legal mail -- is searched by jail staff.

Unacceptable mail includes:

  • Mail with any biohazards, including perfumes or lipstick
  • Mail depicting nudity, weapons, or gang references
  • Mail with any metal, plastics or wrappings
  • Mail that contains stickers or confetti

Inmates may receive pictures by mail. But they must be mailed in an envelope addressed to the Gila County Jail with the inmate's full name listed, with "Attention Property Master" clearly marked on the front of the envelope.

How to Call an Inmate

You can't call an inmate who is housed at the Gila County Jail, but they do have access to phones in their housing units (after their initial appearance, within 24 hours of their arrest) and can make outgoing collect calls.

How to Send Money

The Gila County Jail offers several ways to deposit money into inmate accounts.

  • Jail Visitation Lobby WindowOnly money orders or cashier's check deposits for inmate accounts may be dropped off at the Jail Visitation Lobby Window at either the Globe or Payson area Jail facilities. There are no fees for this service.  Cash is NOT accepted.

Instructions for Money Deposits - Jail Visitation Lobby Window

Deposits are accepted at the Jail Visitation Lobby Window 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Money orders or cashier's checks ONLY.  There is no limit to the amount that may be deposited at the Jail Visitation Lobby Window. All deposits require a valid government issued photo ID,

It is the responsibility of the depositor to ensure all information is correct on the receipt before leaving the Jail. There are no fees for this service.

Programs For Inmates

Inmate Commissary Store

The Gila County Sheriff's Office Jail operates and manages its own Inmate Commissary Store. The profits from commissary sales and telephone use are used to purchase items used by the inmates.

Inmates are not allowed to have clothing or other items dropped off to them. They can purchase T-shirts, underwear, socks as well as writing paper, stamps, envelopes, snacks, and hygiene items through the Jail Commissary.

Serving an Out-of-County Sentence

A housing fee of $175.00 is required for the first day and $90.00 each day thereafter for serving an out-of-county sentence at the Gila County Jail Facilities.  The entire amount for the length of the sentence is due upon arrival.  Please call (928) 402-4258, in advance, for more information.

Work Release

Permission to work outside the Jail Facility while in custody depends upon approval from the sheriff's department.  Inmates who are approved for the Work Release Program must pay a fee of $59.50 per week.  This amount must be paid the Sunday previous to the work week.
