Maple Street Correctional Center

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division operates the Maple Street Correctional Center, located in Redwood City, California. The other jail facility in the county is the Maguire Correctional Facility. 

The Maple Street Correctional Center houses male and female inmates, both pretrial and court-sentenced. This facility also has a dedicated Men’s and Women’s Transitional housing unit.

VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday)

Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE) is a free and anonymous telephone service that provides victims of crime both information and notification. VINE monitors the custody status of offenders in the San Mateo County Jail and receives updated information every 15 minutes.

The Toll Free Number for California VINE is 1.877.411.5588. Anyone can call the California State VINE line to determine an inmate's custody status. To search for offender information, callers will need one of the following items:

• Offender name or alias
• Secondary search option (if there is more than one offender with the same name), such as:
  • Arrest date
  • Date of birth
  • Middle initial
  • Offender identification number

VINE will let callers know about the offender's current custody status, the location of the inmate, and their offender number. 

Posting Bail

If an inmate at Maple Street Correctional Center is eligible for bail, there are two ways to post it -- cash bond or bail bond. To post a cash bond, bring the amount of bail to the cashier's window located in the lobby of the jail. The second way to post bail for an inmate is to use a Bail Bonds Agency.

The visitation schedule at Maple Street Correctional Center is as follows:

All visitors must pre-register at www.smartjailmail.com and be approved before scheduling a visit. All visitors will utilize the video visitation stations at Maple Street Correctional Center to visit inmates.

Visitors must check in AT LEAST 15 minutes prior to their visitation start time, but no more than 45 minutes prior. Visitors arriving late will only receive the balance of the remaining visit time. If a visitor is more than 15 minutes late the visit is automatically canceled. 

All Visitors are required to present valid photo ID (U.S. Driver’s License, Identification Card, Immigration Identification, Military Identification, Valid Passport, or Other Government Issued photo ID).

General Rules

Only one adult 18 or older is allowed per visit. No children are allowed in the visiting room. Inmates are limited to two visits per seven-day period, no more than one in a day. Visits will last a maximum of 45 minutes.

No cell phones, electronic devices, gum, beverages, or food is allowed in the MSCC Lobby or visitation area. Visitors who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will have their visit canceled, may be barred from future video visitation visits, and may be subject to arrest.

Dress Code

The following dress code is enforced in the visiting room of the Maple Street Correctional Center.

• Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be at least as long as the bottom of the fingertips when arms are placed at the sides.
• No bare midriffs, low-cut tops, or any revealing or provocative attire
• No gang attire or gang insignias
• No bandanas, beanies, hairnets, hoods, or hats.
• No steel-toed boots or shoes that will not clear the metal detector.
• Visitors are not permitted to wear “stiletto” type heels
• No orange or red clothing

You must include your name and return address on all inmate mail. Envelopes may not be decorated in any way.

Books, magazines, and newspapers must come directly from a publisher or retailer. Hardback books are not allowed. You must address commercial publications as follows:

• Mail containing contraband will not be delivered to any inmate.
• No Polaroid pictures.  
• Nude photographs, pornographic photographs, erotic photographs or sexually suggestive photographs will NOT be allowed. 
• Pornographic pictures, erotic or sexually suggestive materials, pictures, drawings, or other items determined inappropriate for the facility are not allowed. 

Other prohibited items include:

• Literature that promotes gang activity, violence, hatred, racism, or any other item that affects the security of our correctional facilities. 
• Stamps, writing paper, envelopes, paperclips, metal fasteners, any type of adhesive sticker, including return address stickers and all other items considered as contraband

How to Call an Inmate

Inmates at Maple Street Correctional Center cannot receive incoming phone calls. However, they have access to phones and can make outgoing collect or automated advance pay calls from the inmate housing area.

California law has established the right of an arrested person to make at least three free local telephone calls when they are booked: one call to an attorney, one to a bail bond agent, and one to a relative or other personal contact. 

Phone calls are recorded and may be monitored at any time.

Programs For Inmates

Inmate programs in San Mateo County are operated by The Service League. They include:

Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous

These original 12 step programs are support groups for alcoholics and drug addicts.

AIDS Education

This program educates inmates about the virus and disseminates correct information about the disease and methods of protecting against infection.

Anger Management/Parenting

Inmates learn non-violent ways of dealing with frustrating situations both within families and in the real world.

CHOICES

A substance abuse intervention program for men and women sponsored by the County Health Department.

Enneagram Prison Project (EPP)

The EPP teaches an incisive psychological system called the Enneagram to inmates that helps them identify their repeating patterns of thoughts, feelings, and actions that are most habitually deployed to express themselves and live their lives.  

Hope Inside for Women & Hope Inside for Men

Hope Inside provides inmates with information and techniques to address anger management, addiction and other harmful behaviors and tools to increase self-sufficiency upon release.

Five Keys School

The Five Keys School provides opportunities to restart education. The focus is on the ‘Five Keys’ of Education, Employment, Recovery, Family, and Community. 

Stanford Prison Education Project (S-PEP)

This program offers high-quality educational experiences to the inmates at the San Mateo County Jails. Stanford graduate students teach classes and facilitate book groups for inmates. 

HiSet Tutoring and Preparation

The SMCOE High School Equivalency/Inmate Education program helps incarcerated adults in obtaining a California High School Equivalency Certificate. 

Peacemakers Alliance

Peacemakers Alliance is a critical literacy and peace education program designed to help incarcerated students improve literacy skills, teach students about nonviolence, and build students’ capacity for critical thinking and conflict resolution.

M.O.T.H.E.R.S / F.A.T.H.E.R.S. and Families

The M.O.T.H.E.R.S / F.A.T.H.E.R.S. and Families programs focus on positive, non-violent parenting skills through children’s literature.  

Job Readiness and Success Coaching Program

The Work Readiness Program provides inmates pre/post assessments of work readiness, career assessment, career aptitude, job search strategies, cover letters and resume writing, interviewing skills, and work attire and grooming.

It also offers basic computer literacy lessons, life skills, communication styles, conflict resolution, anger management, interpersonal skills, and work values/work maturity skills.

T.A.I.L.S.

The T.A.I.L.S. Program is a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and the Peninsula Humane Society. Dogs live with inmates who are responsible for their training, grooming, exercise and socialization. A volunteer certified trainer with the Peninsula Humane Society teaches the inmates how to train the dogs in order to increase their adoption potential.

Culinary Program

Students in the Culinary Program learn and build upon their experience in food preparation, knife safety and techniques, food safety and sanitation, opening and closing a commercial kitchen, gourmet pizza making, soups, salads, catering, garnishing and presentation, how to sauté and grill. 

Project Build

Eligible inmates are trained in basic general construction skills and HAZWOPER (hazardous waste removal, asbestos removal and lead removal). The inmate gains a strong foundation in construction, green building, and forklift instruction. 

Sheriff's Work Program (SWP)

Established in 1983, the SWP is an alternative to high cost incarceration and full-time confinement in a jail facility for persons who are considered low-risk, minimum-security offenders. 

Defendants must be recommended to this program via court order. They serve time by participating in a work program and performing manual labor work in lieu of confinement. 

Electronic Monitoring Program (EMP) and Work Furlough Program (WF)

Both the EMP and WF were established as an alternative to incarceration for low risk offenders with a stable housing environment. These programs use advanced electronic equipment for personnel surveillance. Participants are recommended via court order.
