Okaloosa County Jail

The Okaloosa County Jail is located in Crestview, Florida. This facility is operated by the Okaloosa County Department of Corrections and houses adult males and females—both misdemeanor and felony inmates—who have been arrested by local county or municipal law enforcement.

Some of the inmates have been tried and sentenced to jail or the Florida Department of Corrections. However, most inmates have not yet been tried by the courts, so they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Jail History of Overcrowding

The current Okaloosa County Jail was originally constructed in 1963, and was designed to house 124 inmates. In the early 1980s, the inmate capacity was reduced to 82 as a result of state regulations and a federal class action lawsuit was filed against Okaloosa County on behalf of the inmates due to inadequate housing conditions, lack of medical care, and a general lack of funding.

The courts ultimately sided with the inmates and Okaloosa County was ordered to improve the conditions of their jail. In 1982, they added a minimum-security unit with an additional 82 beds. However, overcrowding continued to be an issue. In 1985, a medium/maximum security unit was opened and raised the jail's overall capacity to 242. But, by the end of the 1980s, the jail population was averaging over 300 inmates.

In 1992, there was a major expansion of the Okaloosa County Jail with an additional 232 beds and an overall capacity of 474, but the problems associated with an ever-increasing inmate population continued.

In 2003, another housing area was completed adding 120 beds and bringing the overall design capacity to 594 inmates. However, since that time, the inmate population has continued to grow at an average rate of 3.6% per year resulting in serious overcrowding.

The number of inmates housed in the county jail has exceeded 800 and peaked at over 900 on several occasions.

Bonding someone out of the Okaloosa County Jail

If an inmate has bondable charges, he or she can bond out at any time. For further information on bonding out an inmate, or to find out the bond amount on an inmate, call

There are several ways for an inmate to be released from jail including posting bond, qualifying for pretrial release, being released resulting from a court hearing, etc.

The method (cash/surety) and amount of money needed for bonding someone out of the Pre-Trial Detention Center depends on their charges. Most crimes, but not all crimes, are bondable offenses.

When you pay a cash bond, it is refunded to you when all court appearances have been made and the case is discharged, dismissed, or a not guilty verdict rendered. If the arrestee fails to appear or is found guilty, the money will be forfeited.

When you use a Bail Bondsman for a surety bond, you will not get a refund.
