Visiting Hours and Rules

Visiting hours at Essex County Jail are as follows:

  • Buildings 2 and 5: Wednesdays and Sundays 10:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.
  • Buildings 3 and 4: Thursdays and Saturdays: 10:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.

General Rules

All visits are non-contact. Detainees are allowed one hour for visitation. The warden may authorize more time for family members traveling significant distances. Minors who are visiting must be accompanied by an adult guardian (18 years or older).

To allow for enough time to process visitors through security, all visitors must arrive one hour prior to the scheduled visit time.

All adult visitors must have a valid, government-issued photo identification card to enter the visitation room at Essex County Jail.

Visitors are not allowed to pass or attempt to pass any items to detainees.

Attorney Visits

Attorneys are authorized to visit their clients seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., including holidays.

Consular Visits

Consular officials are allowed to meet with their detained nationals at any time. When possible, arrangements should be made with the ICE Supervisory Deportation Officer in advance by calling (973) 776-7500. All consular officials should bring appropriate credentials. 

Clergy Visits

Clergy are allowed to visit detainees housed at Essex County Jail at any time. Arrangements must be made in advance through the chaplain's office.

When sending a detainee mail, you must include the last four digits of their alien number, plus your name and address. The staff at Essex County Jail does not read incoming detainee mail, but they do screen it for contraband. 

Sending Packages

Detainees at Essex County Jail are not allowed to receive care packages. However, a detainee may receive items that are considered necessary for travel or release from agency custody with approval of the ICE Deportation Officer.

Detainees who are being removed from the United States are allowed one small piece of luggage. This can be sent after receiving approval from the Supervisory Deportation Officer. For security reasons, no electronic devices (cell phones, electric razors, laptop computers, radios, etc.) are accepted.

How to Call an Inmate

You can't call a detainee at Essex County Jail. However, if you need to leave an urgent message you can call (973) 274-7818.

Your message should include the detainee's full name, their alien registration number, and a telephone number where you can be reached.

How to Send Money

You can send money to a detainee at Essex County Jail by mailing a money order or cashier's check directly to the detainee. Do not send cash. 

The processing officer will put the money into the detainee's account and issue a receipt. Cashier’s checks and money orders must include the detainee’s full name and A-number.

To Post a Delivery Bond

When a detainee in ICE custody is placed into removal proceedings while they are in the United States, a delivery bond may be posted. When you post a delivery bond, you are required to show proof of identity.

Bonds for aliens detained by ICE can be posted at ICE ERO bond acceptance offices nationwide, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., local time. Acceptable forms of payment are: 

  • money orders
  • cashier’s checks 
  • certified checks

Payments must be made payable to “U.S. Department of Homeland Security” or “Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”
