Arizona State Prison Complex - Perryville

Arizona State Prison Complex- Perryville, or ASPC- Perryville, is an all-female facility that is located in Goodyear, Arizona. It has a maximum capacity of 4,382 and houses inmates of all security levels.

There are 11 units at SPC-Perryville: Complex Detention, Complex Minors, Lumley Unit (which houses the female death row), Piestewa Unit, San Carlos Unit, San Pedro Unit, Santa Cruz Unit, Santa Maria Unit, Santa Rosa Unit, Special Management, and Women’s Treatment.

One of the most notable inmates at USPC-Perryville is Jodi Arias, who is serving a life-sentence without the possibility of parole for murdering her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander.

There are currently three women on death row at USPC-Perryville: Wendi Andriano, Shawna Forde, and Sammantha Allen.

Visiting Hours and Rules

Visiting days and hours at USPC- Perryville are based on the inmate’s Phase and Unit.  Please call the facility directly to verify the unit’s specific dates and times because they are subject to change.

The inmate’s phase will determine how many visits they can have each week.

San Pedro Unit:

  • Regular visitation is on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-12pm and 12pm-4pm.  
  • Non contact visits are by appointment only and are on Fridays from 12:30pm-2:30pm.

Minors Unit:

  • Visitation Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-12pm and 12pm-4pm.

Lumley Unit:

  • Visitation on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-12pm and 12pm-4pm.
  • Lumley closed-custody inmates are limited to two visits per week, and Lumley maximum-custody inmates are limited to one 2-hour non-contact visit per week.
  • Death row inmates may have non-contact visits on Mondays only from 7am-3pm, the visits for death row inmates are by appointment only.  

Special Management:

  • Inmates may have non-contact visits by appointment only on Thursdays from 8am-10am and again from 10:30am-12:30pm.  General population non-contact visits are Friday from 8am-10am, 10:30am-12:30pm and 1pm-3pm.
  • R&A Phase I inmates may have a single hour of visitation on Wednesdays from 8am-3pm, by appointment only.  To make an appointment for any of the Lumley unit inmates you can call (623)-853-0304 ext. 24656.

Piestewa:

  • Visitation is on Saturdays and Sundays 8am-12pm and 12pm-4pm.

Santa Cruz:

  • Inmates have regular visitation on Saturdays and Sundays 8am-12pm and again from 12pm-4pm.  
  • Non-contact visits are by appointment only on Fridays from 8am-9am and 9am-10am.  The number to schedule an appointment is (623)-853-0304 ext 2455 or 24599.

Santa Maria:

  • Regular visits are on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-12pm, 12pm-4pm

Santa Rosa:

  • Visits are on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-12pm and 12pm-4pm.

San Carlos:

Visitation is on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-12pm and 12pm-4pm.

How To Get On The Approved Visit List

When an inmate first arrives at Arizona State Prison Complex-Perryville, those who want to have visits must submit a Visitation List. Inmates can have a maximum of 20 approved visitors on their list.

Anyone wishing to visit and/or receive telephone calls from an inmate must complete and submit the Application to Visit an Inmate. You can fill out this form online or have your loved one mail the form to you.

You must also pay a one-time $25 fee for a background check. This payment can be made online or mailed in via money order with a paper application. If this fee is not paid, the visitor application will not be processed and you can’t visit an inmate.

Visiting Rules

An inmate can have a maximum of six visitors at one time, regardless of age, during each visit. All adult visitors must have a current photo identification to visit with an inmate.

Visitors are permitted to bring the following items to a visit:

  • Photo ID
  • Prescription medication
  • One unopened package of cigarettes and/or one e-cigarette - Smoking may be prohibited in some visitation areas.
  • Money - Coins totaling a maximum of $40.00 per visitor.
  • Jewelry - One wedding/engagement ring, one religious medallion, one wristwatch and one pair of earrings or two observable body piercings. You must wear all items brought into visitation throughout the visit.
  • Keys - Two vehicle keys or one key and a vehicle remote control entry device.
  • One handheld baby carrier, per infant - The carrier shall be subjected to a thorough search prior to entry. Strollers or carriers with wheels shall not be permitted.
  • One clear plastic diaper bag, per infant – The diaper bag shall be subjected to a thorough search prior to entry. A diaper bag may contain only the following items:
    • Baby bottle - Three clear-plastic baby bottles of milk/formula or equivalent size unopened, commercially sealed containers of juice.
    • Baby food - Four small clear plastic containers (such as, Tupperware container) of soft food or baby food.
    • Diaper - One diaper for each hour of visitation.
    • Sani-wipes - One clear container or Ziploc bag of baby sani-wipes.
    • Blanket - One blanket, measuring no larger than 4' by 4'. The blanket cannot be tan in color.
    • Spoon - One small plastic spoon used to feed an infant.
    • Pacifier - One baby pacifier.
    • Clothing - One change of baby clothing.
    • Bib - One baby bib.
    • Diaper rash medication - One small tube of diaper rash medication.

With the exception of food brought in for food visits, cigarettes, and disposable baby items (diapers, wipes), each visitor must leave the visitation area with the exact property items possessed at the time the visitor was processed to visit.

All clothing that you wear to a visit must be clean, non-offensive, and within the bounds of common decency.

  • Shorts must be knee length, when standing.
  • No jogging shorts, cut-offs, or hip huggers.
  • Skirts and dresses must be knee length, when standing. Slits in skirts and dresses can’t extend above mid-thigh when seated.
  • No sleeveless tops or dresses; tank, tube, and halter tops; tops that are strapless; tops that allow display of bare midriff; mesh clothing; bodysuits; and swimsuits.
  • Tops of clothing shall be no lower than the person’s collarbone in the front and back. No cleavage shall be exposed.
  • Undergarments must be worn at all times.
  • Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Muscle shirts; sleeveless shirts; tank-style shirts; mesh shirts; or shirts that display bare midriff are prohibited.

Prisoners at Arizona State Prison Complex- Perryville have reasonable access to a telephone, but they can’t receive inbound calls. Inmates can only make collect calls or prepaid calls.

How to Send Money

You can put money on an inmate’s book either online, on the phone, or in the lobby of USPC-Perryville using the kiosk.  There are three companies that process inmate funds in Arizona:

Inmates are allowed to spend money on phone calls and commissary.  The commissary (or canteen) is the prison store, where inmates can buy a variety of items like food and beverages, OTC medications, stationary, stamps, hygiene items, clothing, and electronics.

Work Programs

All units at ASPC-Perryville utilize inmate workers in a variety of jobs that are needed to assist in the functioning and operation of the facility. Arizona Law requires that all able-bodied inmates work. The pay scale for most institutional jobs ranges between 10 cents and 50 cents per hour.

The majority of jobs are to be found in the following areas: kitchen work, grounds keeping, maintenance, building porters/janitors, clerks, and recreation aides.

The Department has established some limited/specialized contracts with outside entities through Arizona Correctional Industries which allows some inmates to earn more than 50 cents per hour.

Education Programs

Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED programs are available to all inmates. They must be enrolled in the Department's ABE Literacy Program if it has been determined that they are unable to function at the 8th grade level.

Inmates must also progress beyond the 8th grade level in order to be eligible to receive anything more than the base pay for any job to which they are assigned.

Vocational education programs are available to inmates who qualify through Rio Salado Community College. The Department has a contract with Rio Salado Community College to provide a limited selection of vocational classes to inmates including computers classes.

Treatment Programs

Each Unit provides basic medical and dental care to all of its inmates. Mental health services and psychotropic medications are provided as needed.

Substance abuse services are also available in a variety of formats. The most prevalent vehicles utilized to address substance abuse problems are offered via Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Hazelden Designs for Better Living, Thinking Straight and Substance Abuse Awareness.

In addition, the Department contracts with Civigenics Corporation for a Women's Recovery Academy - an approximate nine month in-custody treatment program - followed by a term of aftercare to assist with reintegration into the community is available.

Contracts are also in place for 96 DUI treatment beds. The Maricopa County Department of Health Services provides Health Education to pre-release inmates.

Volunteers

ASPC-Perryville has numerous religious programs supported by three Chaplains and approximately 160 volunteers that donate a number of hours to spiritual programming, educational tutoring, substance abuse programming, and creative writing.
