Maryland Correctional Institution for Women
The Maryland Correctional Institution for Women is a multi-level security state prison for female inmates that is located in Jessup, Maryland. This facility is the only prison in Maryland that houses only female inmates, with a maximum capacity of approximately 900. The average sentence at this institution is ten years.
A 2013 report from the Department of Justice found that the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women had a higher-than-average rate of guard-on-inmate sexual abuse.

Visiting Hours and Rules
Visiting hours for the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women are as follows:
General Population and Admission Status:
Thursday & Friday - 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday - 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Duration: one hour
Administrative Segregation and Mental Health
Thursday - 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Duration: one hour
Disciplinary Segregation
Thursday - 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Duration: 30 minutes
Protective Custody
Friday - 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Duration: one hour
Infirmary (Only for those inmates who are medically able to visit in the visiting room as determined by medical staff)
Saturday - 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Duration: one hour
All visitors must arrive at least one hour before the close of visitation.
Visits are permitted based on the last digit of the inmate's corrections identification number and the corresponding calendar date.
Inmates with odd ending numbers (1,3,5,7,9) are permitted visits on the corresponding odd date (JanuaryㅡDecember 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15 etc.).
Inmates with even ending numbers (0,2,4,6,8) are permitted visits on the corresponding even date (JanuaryㅡDecember 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14 etc.).
There are no visits on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or the 31st of any month.
General Visiting Rules
Use of restroom facilities is not allowed during visitation. If either the inmate or a visitor needs to use the restroom, the visit will be terminated at that time. Please remember this when visiting with small children.
All visitors (16 years of age and older) must have photo identification.
Children (18 years of age and younger) visiting the inmate must be immediate family to either the inmate or visitor, and must be accompanied by a person 18 years of age or older who is on the inmate's visiting list.
An inmate may receive no more than two visits per week and only one visit per day.
A maximum of four visitors may visit an inmate at one time, regardless of age, with the exception of infants (6 months or younger). At least one visitor must be an adult.
Visits that take place in the infirmary are limited to two adult visitors.
No packages, money orders, cash, or checks may be brought into the institution by visitors.
Dress Code
All visitors, including children, must dress appropriately for visitation. All clothing must cover you from the neck to the kneecaps.
The following types of clothing are not allowed to be worn:
- tube tops, tank tops, or halter tops
- see-through clothing
- mini-skirts, mini-dresses, shorts, skorts, or culottes (at or above the kneecap)
- form-fitting clothes such as leotards, spandex, and leggings
- clothes that expose a person's midriff, side, or back
- tops or dresses that have revealing necklines and/or excessive splits
- coats, jackets, shawls, and scarves will be placed in an appropriate area (Exceptions will be made for religious headdress)
- shower shoes or flip flops

How to Send Money
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services–Division of Correction only accepts Money Orders. NOTE: Cashier Checks, Personal Checks, Official Checks, Bill Pay Checks, Bank Checks, Non-Electronic Transfers, and Non-US Currency Checks/Money Orders will not be accepted.
You must include the following info on the money order:
- The Inmate’s Name, Institution, and Inmate SID # (State Identification Number).
- Sender’s Name and Address.
Please use Black or Blue Ink pen only on the money orders and neatly PRINT the required information.

Programs For Inmates
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services provides education, health, and training programs to help ensure offenders at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women can become positive, contributing members to the communities they return to.
The restorative justice program, Public Safety Works, provides employment skills as well as an opportunity for offenders to give back to the community they have harmed.
Women at the prison stitch flags for Maryland government agencies, and they have helped write plays that were eventually performed outside of prison. Health and wellness classes, like yoga, are also available.
GED, vocational, and college classes from Goucher College are also available.
