Visiting Hours and Rules

Visiting Hours at Maryland Correctional Institution - Hagerstown are as follows:

General Population

Saturday and Sunday: 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

*On major holidays, an extra visiting day may be added to either Friday or Monday. Any changes will be announced ahead of time.

Protective Custody

Saturday: 4:45 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.

Registration begins at 4:15 p.m. and ends at 6:15 p.m.

Administrative and Disciplinary Segregation

Saturday and Sunday: 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Visiting registration begins at 8:15 a.m.and ends at 1:45 p.m.

General Visiting Rules

Visits can last up to one hour, and a maximum of three adults and three children are permitted to visit at one time. 

General population inmates are allowed two visits per week, and disciplinary segregation inmates are allowed one visit per week.

All visitors (16 years of age and older) must have photo identification.

Children (18 years of age and younger) visiting the inmate must be immediate family to either the inmate or visitor, and must be accompanied by a person 18 years of age or older who is on the inmate's visiting list.

Use of restroom facilities is prohibited during visitation. If either the inmate or a visitor requires the use of the restroom, the visit will be terminated at that time. Please remember this when visiting with small children.

Odd/even restrictions no longer apply.

Dress Code

All visitors, including children, must dress appropriately for visitation.  All clothing must cover you from the neck to the kneecaps.

The following types of clothing are not allowed to be worn:

  • tube tops, tank tops, or halter tops
  • see-through clothing
  • mini-skirts, mini-dresses, shorts, skorts, or culottes (at or above the kneecap)
  • form-fitting clothes such as leotards, spandex, and leggings
  • clothes that expose a person's midriff, side, or back
  • tops or dresses that have revealing necklines and/or excessive splits
  • coats, jackets, shawls, and scarves will be placed in an appropriate area (Exceptions will be made for religious headdress)
  • shower shoes or flip flops

Visitors must remove jewelry, to include tongue, ear, and facial piercings, with the exception of wedding ring sets or medic alert jewelry and store them in the lockers that are provided.

How to Send Money

Maryland Correctional Institution - Hagerstown uses a Lockbox system for friends and family members to send inmates money. The Lockbox is a service provided by a bank where money orders received at the designated P.O. Box are picked up and delivered to the bank responsible for processing and depositing the incoming Money Orders sent to inmates.

​Programs For ​Inmates

Inmates at Maryland Correctional Institution - Hagerstown can take classes in reading, writing, and math while earning their GED. There are also vocational classes available in carpet cleaning, upholstery, computer courses, and sheet metal fabrication.  

Another program at the prison has inmates training service dogs for wounded veterans, and some of the job opportunities available include: laundry, recycling, upholstery, meat processing, and metal work.

Inmates can also take a six-month, substance abuse, treatment program.
