East Mississippi Correctional Facility

East Mississippi Correctional Facility is a mixed-class state prison for male inmates that is located near Meridian, Mississippi. This facility opened in 1999, and it is a special needs prison for inmates with serious mental illness. The maximum capacity of this facility is 1,500.

This facility is one of the prisons in the state of Mississippi that operate under a contract between the Mississippi Department of Corrections and a private company. Numerous for-profit companies have managed this facility over the past two decades, but they have all come under fire because of East Mississippi Correctional Facility’s horrible conditions, human rights violations, and substandard medical treatment for inmates. This prison has also been the subject of numerous investigations and lawsuits.

Currently, the Management and Training Corporation (MTC) has the contract for East Mississippi Correctional Facility. However, according to the ACLU, this prison is still “Hell on Earth.”

MTC prepares incarcerated men to successfully return to their communities. Nearly all of the men incarcerated at East Mississippi Correctional Facility will eventually be released. It’s MTC’s responsibility to provide a wide range of educational, vocational, substance abuse, cognitive behavioral, and life skills programs to prepare these men to successfully return to their communities.
