Bertie Correctional Institution
Bertie Correctional Institution is a prison for male inmates in close and medium custody that is located in Windsor, North Carolina. The facility can house approximately 1,504 inmates and is managed by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Bertie Correctional Institution is comprised of two facility units housing close and medium custody offenders. The close custody unit is a 1,000 single-cell unit. The medium custody unit is a 504-bed open dormitory. The facility reduced restrictive housing cells from 269 beds to 128 beds in 2016.
Bertie CI opened in August 2006. The facility employs correctional officers, registered nurses, physicians, dentists, mental health providers, maintenance, case managers, and program and administrative staff.
The facility is operated under the unit management system and is separated into four units in the close custody unit, and is separated into two units in the medium custody unit. Close custody units are the Gray Unit, Red Unit, Blue Unit, and Green Unit.
The Gray Unit houses offenders assigned to restrictive housing. The Red, Blue, and Green units house offenders assigned to the regular and general population. The Blue Unit also houses offenders assigned to Regular Population Modified Housing. Medium custody regular population units are Tan 1 and Tan 2.

Visiting Hours and Rules
VISITATION TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED
To prevent the potential spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), prison visitation was suspended as of Monday, March 16, 2020. Visitation will resume when conditions are deemed safe.
Regular Visiting Hours
Visitation is offered on various days throughout the week except Sundays. Visitation hours are established based on facility operations status. Normally, morning and afternoon hours are available on various days except Sundays from 9 - 11 a.m. and 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Days and hours available for inmate visitation is based on the status of the inmate and program assignment. A valid photo identification card must be presented by anyone 16 years or older before the visit will be authorized.
Questions and requests to visit should be directed to the visitation office at (252) 794-8634. Requests to visit should be made at least 24 hours in advance. All visitors should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled visit due to search procedures.
Visiting Application
You must complete an application and have it approved before visiting an inmate. Your inmate must send you a blank application for each adult and minor who wishes to visit. After you complete your application, you must return it to the Bertie Correctional Institution.
Inmates are allowed no more than one visiting session per week for a maximum of two hours. The maximum number of visitors per visiting session can’t exceed three approved visitors.

Dress Code
All visitors must follow the dress code or they will be denied entrance into the facility. Before you are allowed to visit, you must pass through a metal detector search.
- Halter tops, bare midriffs, strapless tops, tube tops, bodysuits, underwear-type T-shirts, tank tops, or sleeveless shirts or dresses that are inappropriately revealing (a sleeveless shirt or dress is considered inappropriately revealing when the female breast or lingerie can be seen), fishnet shirts, or any type of shirt or pants made with see-through fabric are NOT allowed to be worn by any visitor (male or female).
- Visitors may wear Bermuda-length shorts provided they are not more than three inches above the kneecap.
- Females may wear dresses or skirts, but they may not be more than three inches above the kneecap. Slits in skirts and dresses may not be more than three inches above the kneecap. Dresses and skirts for pre-teens may be shorter than three inches above the kneecap.
- Any shirt or other articles of clothing with a picture or language that may be considered profane or offensive by current public standards or Adult Correction standards, or considered STG (gang) related will not be allowed.
- Wave caps, doo rags, and bandanas are not allowed.
- Slacks and pants are to be worn at or above the waist.
- Spandex clothing is prohibited.
- Visitors must wear closed-toed shoes (no flip-flops or stilettos permitted).
- Shirts and shoes are mandatory.

Programs For Inmates
Community volunteers assist the facility with religious and transitional opportunities for offenders. Education and vocational classes are provided by Martin Community College and East Carolina University. Case managers provide programs such as the offender service club, AA, NA, CBI, in-cell studies, anger management, breaking the cycle, domestic violence, fatherhood parenting, etc.
