Broad River Correctional Institution
Broad River Correctional Institution is a level 3 facility for male inmates that is located in Columbia, South Carolina.
This institution provides housing for the general population, as well as medically dependent inmates and those within the special management unit (SMU). The medically dependent inmates are housed in the Moultrie Unit and require 24 hour medical care.
Also, the institution houses inmates that are deaf and blind, as well as those that require dialysis and sex offender treatment. Additionally, the Capital Punishment facility is located here and carries out South Carolina's court-ordered executions.
It also provides facilities, security staff and support to host revocation and parole hearings for the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.

Visiting Applications
Each inmate is allowed to have a maximum of fifteen (15) approved visitors on his/her visiting list. The only way for an individual to receive a visiting privileges form is from the inmate who wants them to visit. Inmates will send "Request for Visiting Privileges" forms to their prospective visitors.
Every individual must complete this form and forward it to Visitation through the Central Visitation Center for processing.
Once the application form has been properly completed, submitted, and approved, the individual is added to the inmate's visiting list. An inmate is provided a copy of his approved visiting list once a week if a change is made during that week. IT IS THE INMATE'S RESPONSIBILITY TO ADVISE HIS/HER VISITOR(S) OF THEIR APPROVAL.

Visiting Rules
The South Carolina Department of Corrections is committed to encouraging relationships between inmates, their family members, and their friends. They strongly feel that visitation is an important part of each inmate's rehabilitation. At the same time, the Department must provide for the safety and security of each facility, staff, and inmates, and most importantly, the safety of other visitors, the public, and you.
Based on security concerns, all personal devices that communicate wirelessly, including activity fitness trackers and smart watches, are prohibited from being brought into SCDC institutions.
All visitors age 18 and older are required to submit to a pat/frisk search in addition to the existing search procedures. Female visitors will be searched by female employees only. Male visitors may be searched by employees of either gender.

Cooper Trust Fund Accounts
Every inmate has a Cooper Trust Fund Account that allows them to make purchases in the institution. The back of the inmate's identification card has a magnetic strip that allows the ID card to function as a debit card to that inmate's Cooper Trust Fund Account. Mail a Money Order
Family members and friends can make deposits into an inmate's Cooper Trust Fund account through GTL. Other than the cost to obtain a money order, there are no fees to deposit it, but money orders must be mailed and the deposit slip that must be sent with them must be read electronically and processed before the funds become available. Programs For Inmates
Education: Literacy and GED preparation.
Health Care: Routine medical and dental care on site with 24-hour medical coverage.
Industries: Industries operates two separate plants. Prison Industries I (P1-1) plant entails three work programs. The Tag Plant manufactures all vehicle license plates for the State of South Carolina. The Sign Shop manufactures signs, decals, name plates, etc., for state agencies, counties, municipalities, and non-profit organizations.
Programs: Statewide Protective Custody, Residential Sex Offender Treatment Program, Religious and Volunteer programs, Narcotics and Alcoholics Anonymous, and Recreational services.
Services: Serves as one of the video conferencing sites for parole hearings in conjunction with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. Dialysis site for SCDC inmates.
