Kirkland Correctional Institution

Kirkland Correctional Institution is a level 3 prison for male inmates that is located in Columbia, South Carolina. The prison was first opened in 1975, and houses approximately 1,700 inmates.

Kirkland receives, assesses, classifies, and assigns all male offenders age 17 and above sentenced to 91 days or more. Combined, the R&E process receives approximately 8,000 offenders each year. 

Kirkland is the site for the Maximum Security Unit that serves the state. This specialized housing unit is where the most dangerous and violent offenders are housed. In addition to the normal inmate population, Kirkland maintains the death row for the entire state.

Inmates are not allowed to have visitors during the reception and evaluation process unless they remain in the Reception and Evaluation Center longer than thirty (30) days and the visitor is on the approved visiting list. 

After thirty (30) days only an inmates' parents, grandparents, spouse, and/or children are eligible to visit at R&E. In order to schedule a visit at R&E on the approved list after 30 days, contact 803-896-2000 between the hours of 8:00-12:00 on Mondays and Tuesdays ONLY.

Visiting Applications

The only way you can receive a "visiting privileges form" is from the inmate who wants you to visit. Inmates will send the forms to their prospective visitors. You must complete this form and forward it to Visitation through the Central Visitation Center for processing.  

Once the application form has been properly completed, submitted, and approved, the individual is added to the inmate's visiting list. IT IS THE INMATE'S RESPONSIBILITY TO ADVISE HIS/HER VISITOR(S) OF THEIR APPROVAL.

Visiting Rules

The South Carolina Department of Corrections feels that visits are an important part of each inmate's rehabilitation. At the same time, the Department must provide for the safety and security of each facility.

Based on security concerns, all personal devices that communicate wirelessly, including activity fitness trackers and smart watches, are prohibited from being brought into SCDC institutions. 

All visitors age 18 and older are required to submit to a pat/frisk search in addition to the existing search procedures.

All incoming inmate mail must include the inmate’s legal name and SCDC number, living unit. Also include the full name of the institution and have a complete return address in the upper left-hand corner

SCDC sponsors four Inmate Package Programs yearly from Access Securepak. Family/friends can order various combinations for shipment to the inmate's institution. The packages contain a wide variety of snacks, candy, and seafood.

How to Send Money

You can send money by phone using your credit or debit card. Call (888) 988-4768 and follow the prompts. For trust (canteen) deposits, the Site ID number is 121. To speak with a live agent 24/7, call customer service at (877) 650-4249.

Walk-In (cash or debit card)

Cash deposits to ConnectNetwork are now available at 26,000 retail locations nationwide including Walmart, ACE, Kmart, Kroger, and more. Find a location.

Programs For Inmates

  • Education: Educational evaluations, monthly GED testing, Corrections Learning Network, GED Preparation, and Adult Basic Education.
  • Health Care: Routine medical and dental care provided on site. A DHEC licensed 24-bed infirmary for use by all SCDC male inmates. Mental health services provided by staff of the Gilliam Psychiatric Hospital. Intermediate Care Services Unit for males.
  • Programs: Religious services, volunteer services and recreational services.
  • Services: Serves as one of the video conferencing sites for parole hearings in conjunction with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.
