Rapid City Community Work Center
The Rapid City Community Work Center is a minimum-security male facility under the direction of the Mike Durfee State Prison and Warden Brent Fluke.
On a daily basis, inmates work on community service projects such as firefighting or helping thin timber in the Black Hills. Other inmates are on work release status, working in the community for various businesses. Parolees in the Community Transition Program are also housed there.
The state Department of Health provides medical, dental, and optometric services for the adult corrections system.
The Yankton Community Work Center is also a minimum-security male facility under the direction of the Mike Durfee State Prison and Warden Brent Fluke. It opened in the early 1970's to provide support services for the Human Services Center and it has grown over the years to a working unit with a population of 150 to 240 adult inmates.
The unit supplies workers for several different programs. On a daily basis, inmates work in support services for the Human Services Center, are assigned to Community Service Projects or are on Work Release status, meaning they hold jobs in the community. Parolees in the Community Transition Program are also housed there.

Programs For Inmates
Rapid City
- Community service projects (firefighting or helping thin timber in the Black Hills)
- Work Release programs in the community for various businesses
Yankton
The center provides GED classes and elective classes for education, a wide range of recreational activities, and a variety of religious services. The center also provides a treatment unit with drug and alcohol treatment classes, both long term and relapse.
Yankton also participates in the Long Distance Parenting Program that allows inmates to have greater involvement in their child's lives while in prison.
Both Rapid City and Yankton house parolees in the Community Transition Program (CTP)
The objectives of the CTP:
1. Identify community programming that may benefit the offender while in the community and provide the offender opportunities to acquire and improve skills necessary for successful transition into the community while the offender is awaiting release to the community.
2. Address re-entry issues (including housing, employment and access to community based treatment, programming and counseling services) for offenders released to CTP who have been identified as having relapse/chemical dependency needs, in lieu of revoking the offender’s parole or suspended sentence.
3. Provide temporary housing placement in a designated DOC facility as part of a containment plan, during which time, parole staff will work with the offender to develop an alternative strategy and release plan, in lieu of revoking the offender’s parole or suspended sentence.
