Programs For Inmates
Risk Intervention Services (RIS) are structured activities from the Vermont Department of Corrections which have been integrated to support sentenced offenders who are at a moderate to high risk of reoffending. Through different programs and classes, inmates are presented with the skills to be successful in Vermont communities.
Services include group and individual clinical services, education, and workforce readiness classes provided by Community High School of Vermont (CHSVT), work related opportunities provided by the Vermont Correctional Industries (VCI), and other evidence-based activities related to thoughts and behaviors that lead people to commit a crime.
The Community High School of Vermont
The Community High School of Vermont (CHSVT) has a campus at Northwest Correctional Facility that provides learning opportunities for inmates. Their dual mission is to offer an accredited high school education while providing risk-reducing interventions to decrease recidivism.
CHSVT is a mindful school that infuses the "Habits of Mind" model into its practices and policies. Students learn how to become critical thinkers and develop a sense of inquiry, exactness, and flexible thinking from new perspectives.
Vermont Correctional Industries
Vermont Correctional Industries focuses on workforce development and gives inmates opportunities to learn on the job skills.
The License Plate Shop is located at Northwest State Correctional Facility. Inmate produce license plates for the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Vermont State Police, and custom commemorative plates. This shop employs 14 inmates.
