Huttonsville Correctional Center
The Huttonsville Correctional Center is a mixed-custody prison located near Huttonsville, West Virginia. This facility is operated by the West Virginia Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and can house a maximum of 1,140 inmates, plus 48 in the work camp.
This facility was created by an act of the West Virginia legislature in 1937 to relieve overcrowding in the West Virginia Penitentiary. The original focus of the prison was as a labor-intensive general-purpose farm. In 1977 the 5,000-acre farm was turned over to the state Farm Management Commission and converted to a beef cattle operation. Today, a small number of inmates still work on the cattle farm
In 2012, they opened the Huttonsville Work Camp, which is adjacent to the correctional center. The camp houses only minimum-security, non-violent offenders.
The purpose of this facility is to relieve the overcrowding in the West Virginia correctional system. It also serves as a transitional facility for inmates who are moving from higher security prisons to a minimum-security environment to prepare for their release.
The main correctional center features general population units, segregation, a community service unit, and a residential substance abuse treatment unit. This facility also has an intake and classification unit.
