Black River Correctional Center

The Black River Correctional Center is a prison for male inmates that is located in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. This facility is part of the Wisconsin Correctional System, an "institution" that includes 14 adult male correctional centers overseen by a single warden centrally located in Madison, Wisconsin.

Black River first opened as a correctional camp for boys in 1962. It became BRCC in December of 2003 and housed adult male inmates in a "military bearing" program. In 2014, Black River changed to a low-risk Earned Release Program.

Programs For Inmates

BRCC uses evidence-based practices in their primary program, the Earned Release Program (ERP). The core curriculum used in ERP is Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Substance Abuse. The low-risk program is abstinence-based and is generally 90-days in length. It includes specially structured weekly activities.

All inmates at BRCC are required to fully participate in programming, work-related activities and community service.  Inmates without a diploma or GED have an opportunity to attend school with individual tutoring as they work towards earning a High School Equivalency Diploma.

A major emphasis of ERP is community reentry, which involves the inmate’s Division of Community Corrections agent from the first month of the program. Their involvement increases during release planning to address aftercare, residence, support services, and employment.

Each inmate must prepare a release plan that is reviewed by staff. Upon completion of the program, the sentencing court is notified and modifies the sentence to release inmate graduates on Extended Supervision.

Other programming at BRCC includes Substance Abuse Disorder Treatment and Thinking for A Change.
