Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution

The Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution is the main intake and assessment center for male and female inmates in the state who are not sentenced to death. It is located in Torrington, Wyoming.

It also serves as a primary education and treatment center for inmates identified as requiring high levels of protective custody. As well as those who need medical, mental health, dental, substance abuse, life skills, cognitive/behavioral, and/or sex offender treatment services. This medium-security facility is operated by the Wyoming Department of Corrections.

Major Holidays that fall on a Monday or Tuesday will have visitation sessions from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Visitors must check in at the Administration area 30 minutes prior to the scheduled visiting time for processing. Visitors may not arrive more than 45 minutes prior to scheduled visiting times.

  • Inmates housed in the Intake Unit are not allowed visits.
  • Visits to inmates housed in Medical/Geriatric/Hospice/OB/GYN require special arrangements.
  • Visits for inmates assigned to Chronic Mental Health (CMH) may occur during any open visiting session.  
  • Inmates housed in CMH with no-contact conflicts will require special arrangements.

General Visiting Rules

You must fill out a visitor application and get approval before visiting an inmate at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution. Everyone over 16 must have a current photo ID to enter the visiting room.

All visitors are subject to random searches. You can't bring property, including mail and photographs, to your inmate through the visiting process. Keep all of your personal property such as purses, keys, wallets, money, coats, hats, blankets, etc. in a visitor locker or leave these items locked in your vehicle.

No cash other than up to $20 in change, tokens, or other authorized cash substitute devices are allowed in the visiting room/area.

Baby-care items are permitted as follows per child: 

  • up to six diapers
  • up to two empty clear bottles (plastic) or one clear sippy cup
  • one single layer blanket
  • one pacifier
  • two teething toys 
  • one sealed, unopened carton/container of milk (not to exceed one-pint in size), or one sealed, unopened powdered milk container, or sealed unopened individual powder or liquid formula packs
  • diaper wipes (in a clear plastic bag or in an unopened sealed package). 

All items are subject to search. No baby seats or carriers will be permitted. 

Visitors are not permitted to bring cameras, audio/video recording equipment, cell phones, or any other electronic devices into the visiting room. Money orders or cashier’s checks will be accepted from visitors during visitation for later posting to inmate’s accounts – NO CASH OR PERSONAL CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED. 

All money orders and cashier’s checks must be clearly marked with the inmate’s name and number and given to the receptionist, or placed into a designated secure drop box if so directed.

Dress Code

Visitors are encouraged to wear clothing that is conservative in nature in order to maintain a respectful visiting environment. Some types of clothing are prohibited to maintain the security of the facility. 

Visitors are not allowed to wear blue denim or other clothing that is similar to inmate attire. Children shorter than three feet tall are permitted to wear blue denim. 

Clothing that is suggestive or form fitting is prohibited. Dresses, skirts, jumpers, culottes, and shorts can't be worn more than two inches above the middle of the kneecap. 

Slit dresses/skirts are permitted only if the slit is not more than two inches above the middle of the kneecap. Wrap-around skirts are not permitted.

Clothing that exposes an undue amount of flesh (e.g., exposing chest, back, thighs, or midsection) is prohibited. Examples include: halter tops/dress, tube tops, see-through clothing, sheer fabrics, mini-skirts, shirts with low cut necklines, wrap around skirts, and crop tops. 

Visitors are required to wear undergarments.

Sweatshirts with hoods are not permitted inside the visiting area at any time.

Clothing, hairstyles, insignias or other paraphernalia associated with security threat groups (gangs) or that create undue attention or conflict are prohibited; i.e., clothing with slogans, suggestive, or controversial statements.

Footwear must be worn.

Sex Offender Treatment

Sex Offender-Specific Assessment and Residential Therapeutic Community Treatment is available at Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution. These sex offender treatment services are provided by licensed clinicians.

Intensive Treatment Unit (WMCI-ITU)

The residential substance abuse treatment program at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution’s Intensive Treatment Unit (WMCI-ITU) can accommodate 72 male inmates. It is designed to operate as modified therapeutic communities using a holistic treatment approach. Inmates in this program are housed in a unit separate from the general population.

The intent of the program is to create an environment that provides a 24/7 learning experience that supports and reinforces positive life choices, the acquisition of life and recovery skills, and the acceptance of ongoing recovery maintenance.

The Braille Program

This program allows inmates to get certified and recognized as professionals in the field of Braille transcription. It offers a variety of literary and musical transcription services. In addition to Braille transcription, inmates are also qualified to clean and repair Braillers.

Items that can be transcribed include Books, Brochures, Calendars, Cookbooks, Forms, Greeting Cards, Instruction Manuals, Maps, Menus, Music, Tests, and Textbooks.

Garment Shop

WY Brand Industries has a garment shop at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington.

In addition to the garment shop, this facility also offers embroidery and screen printing. The skilled inmates are capable of manufacturing and sewing complex products. They include:

Inmates working with WY Brand Industries can also custom imprint promotional items and clothing. They use sublimation printing and heat transfer techniques, which allows them to place logos on coffee mugs, mouse pads, water bottles, pens, tote bags, polo shirts, jackets, t-shirts and more.
